3rd phase of Museology and Museography in Pakistan

Conference Theme: Preserving Regionalism

The start of archaeological studies in Indian sub-continent can not be related with the making of Pakistan because it did not play any role in this movement.  During the British Regime in sub-continent, many local archaeologist and heritage mangers were trained and engaged in survey, collecting artifacts, putting them in reserves and establishing new museums.  The writings of British experts had their own point of view on history and historiography. They trained local people with no out line i.e. if in future they have separate identities i.e. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Pakistan came into being in 1947 AD. Many Archaeologists, Historians and Museologists shared their skills in this subject but again they were separated in 1971 AD. West Pakistan was accepted as Pakistan by the people of Pakistan.

After 1971 AD, the remaining people in this field refreshed their skills and worked for remaining portions of history, archaeology and museums.  In 2013, many from political elite talk about new-Pakistan: than question arises: what happened to old one?  The answer of this question is with the Museologists of the 3rd Phase.

In this conference, the Archaeologist, Museologists, Historians and Heritage Managers of Pakistan, will determine a path and follow it with determination- the path lead towards standardization in ideas and thoughts in history and evidence of history, pre-history, proto-history, tangible & non-tangible.  Preserving regionalism has been overlooked, which is the base of self interpreted ideas and thoughts that grown and gain much strength in early two phases, caused deterioration in National Integration.

In 2013 AD, in its 3rd phase, developing new museums at every regional level in Pakistan is the requirement with a new Museography.  In this Conference, the scholars from all over Pakistan will formulate the standards of interpretation and preservation of regionalism through the tangible and non-tangible heritage, preparation of lessons of history, adopting calendar of events and developing cultural diary in a specific region.

The Lyallpur Museum, Faisalabad, a newly established regional history museum is a role model.  We will discuss preserving regionalism: facts and fears. Establishing Pakistan Museum Council and Regional History Museums is an important topic of 3rd Phase.  The Finnish Museums Association has been taken on board to work together with us. A memorandum of understanding for 3 years has already been signed. Working together with FMA will develop our modules as well as improve interpretation techniques and skills. FMA is a role model in utilizing cultural institutes as education centers. It further on leads regions to become a Union! The European Union is an example!
